About Us

Our 60 Nicomekl Enhancement Society (NES) community volunteers participate under the auspices of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Salmonid Enhancement Program (SEP) which commenced provice-wide in 1977.

DFO Community Advisor Joe Kambeitz is our departmental and technical resource. Our membership resides throughout the Nicomekl River Watershed comprising - 50% Langley Township, 25% Langley City, 25% City of Surrey and eleswhere.

They come from all walks of life and bring their professional skills, trades, knowledge and time to enable a wide range of salmon enhancement projects to be completed. For this reason, NES is self sufficient in much of what we do.

We are a 'hands on' organization with the necessary in-house expertise and equipment to operate a full scale salmon hatchery. This includes related chores such as netting spawners anywhere in the watershed, taking eggs, incubation, feeding, transporting and releasing the fry at well attended public fish releases. NES members design and contruct our own buildings and maintain machinery and equipment at the hatchery site. NES has been fortunate to have many sponsors and donors over the years, for without them our enhancement activities could not succeed.

NES members attend the hatchery daily during the open hatchery season of October thru May with Sunday mornings a time to meet and do group work that is required. Our volunteers attend as and when they can. Special projects are planned according to the availability of volunteers attendance at public environmental events, educational forums and celebrations all part of our routine.

Our Mission

"A 100% volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Nicomekl River Watershed"

NES contiues to maintain and improve the sustainability of Nicomekl salmon stocks through good stewardship practises. In addition to the hatchery operation, habitat restoration of water courses for spawning salmon is a priority. Cleaning debris from creeks, streams are annual public events during the summer months with our supporters and sponsors providing there equipment and tools to ease the work. Then follows placement of spawning gravel with planting of native plant species to stabilize and rejuvenate the creek banks.
